Stories are like recipes

By Hailey Stangebye

I’m the Content Manager at Warhol & WALL ST., and here is my story.

Imagine a crowded kitchen countertop sprinkled with bits of flour and sugar. To the untrained eye, it was chaotic: two young girls leaned over the counter, the electric mixer spun round, measuring cups sprawled from one end of the kitchen to the next and chatter bounced off the walls.

Amidst the bustle, my mom would tell my sister and I stories. She would talk about the time that she decorated wedding cakes with sweet flowers made of frosting, or the time that my grandma recruited her to wrap hundreds of homemade caramels, or — my personal favorite — the time grandpa was caught red-handed for eating all of the Russian tea cakes (the powdered sugar down the front of his shirt was a clear giveaway).

Here, in my Michigan childhood home, is where I found my passion. Not for baking — don’t misunderstand, I love to bake — but for stories. Baking was one of my first connections to my personal history. It’s where I learned to listen with both my ears and my hands.

I press spritz cookies just like my grandma Stangebye, I knead dough like my aunt Cindy and I mix cream cheese frosting like my mom.

To me, stories are so much more than static words on a page. Stories are like recipes. You bring them to life each time you share them.

To me, stories are so much more than static words on a page. Stories are like recipes. You bring them to life each time you share them. They have this captivating aroma that brings people closer. Stories, like all forms of art, are so much more than a luxury. They’re a human necessity.

That’s why I decided to pursue writing when I attended Ohio State. After graduating with my degree in journalism, I discovered Warhol & WALL ST. and fell in love. Here, I can apply the perfect mix of my experiences. I craft in-depth narratives like the ones that I wrote for the Ohio State Alumni Magazine, I adapt stories for multimedia platforms like my work for The Lantern and, most importantly, I work with a highly motivated, creative team.

I’m the Content Manager at Warhol & WALL ST., and storytelling is my superpower. In my experience, every person, company and collective has a story to tell. I help them find their voice.
